By boat from UK to Portugal (via Spain): if you’re travelling from the UK and coming by car, you might like to take one of the Brittany Ferries sailings from Portsmouth or Plymouth to Bilbao or Santander to cut down the driving time. Check http://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk for sailing times and costs (which vary hugely depending on time of year and cabin you chose). Once you get to Bilbao or Santander, put “Quinta do Areal” in Lousã into Google Maps and you’ll find us. Drive time is about 7 hrs.
By air to Portugal: nearest airports are Porto (OPO) and Lisbon (LIS). Both have regular flights from many European airports. Lisbon possibly has more options for visitors from the Netherlands and the United States. Porto possibly has more from the UK.
Rental car: expect to pay €200+ for a modest car for a week. Search “Quinta do Areal” in Lousã in Google Maps and will get you here. Drive time from either airport is around 2 hours.
By taxi straight to Lousã: journey time from either airport is around 2 hrs, but the distance is slightly more from Lisbon. Expect to pay up to €200 from Lisbon or €160 from Porto, one-way. Tell the driver to look up “Quinta do Areal” in Lousã on Google Maps. We can give recommendations.
By train to Coimbra:
There are excellent train links from Lisbon and Porto with regular trains. Check https://www.cp.pt/passageiros/en/train-times for train time and prices and to book.
From Lisbon airport, the fastest trains run from Lisbon (Oriente) station. Train tickets to Coimbra (B) are currently between €14-35 one-way. Journey time is between 1hr30 (intercity train) and up to 4hrs (stopping train) so make sure to book onto the right train! To get to Lisbon (Oriente) by Metro from the airport, take the red line (vermelha, in Portuguese) towards San Sebastião. Cost is around €2-3. Alternatively, take a taxi (c.€10).
From Porto airport, the fastest trains run from Porto (Campanha) station. Train tickets to Coimbra (B) are currently between €9-23 one-way. Journey time is between 1hr15 (intercity train) and around 2hrs (stopping train).To get to Porto (Campanha) from the airport by Metro, take line E to Senhora da Hora (about 14 minutes) then change to line A, B, C or F and get off at Campanha (about 19 minutes). Cost is around €2-4. Alternatively, get a taxi (c.€10).
By bus to Coimbra:
Flixbus (https://www.flixbus.pt/en/timetables) and Redes Express (https://rede-expressos.pt/en) run regular services from Lisbon and Porto to Coimbra. Journey time is around 1hr 20 from Porto and around 2 hr 15 and cost is between €7-16.
From Coimbra:
A taxi to Lousã should cost under €30 and journey time should be around 35 minutes. Tell the driver to look up Quinta do Areal in Lousã on Google Maps.
Alternatively, take the bus to Lousã. Journey time from Coimbra B station is around 1hr20. You’ll need to change at Coimbra (Parque) after about 10 minutes for the Lousã bus. Cost is around €6.
